![]() By BREN MIOSEK SYRACUSE Looking to compare himself to the rest of the top high-school level tennis talents in New York state Cooperstown resident Chris Gentile made the trip to Sedgwick Farm Tennis Club on Monday, July 3 to compete in a Level I United States Tennis Association tournament. “I had a lot of fun,” said Gentile following last Wednesday’s performance. “Some of the best players in the state were there and I got a chance to play on red clay,” said Gentile. “I entered the tournament on Monday with the hopes of only winning a few rounds.” Gentile, a fierce competitor, did more than win a few rounds. With a blistering serve and a tenacious back hand Gentile fought his way into the finals over the course of the three-day long event. On Monday, July 3 Gentile opened at Sedgwick Farm Tennis Club with an impressive 6-2, 6-1 victory during first round action. Showing no signs of letting up, Gentile made the trip back to Syracuse on Tuesday, July 4 and won big 6-2, 6-1, catapulting him into the finals. Aiming to cap an already solid performance, Gentile returned to Sedgwick Farm Tennis Club on Wednesday, July 5 to face James McGuire of Rochester for the overall championship. Unable able to match the efforts of McGuire, Gentile lost a hard fought contest, 6-2, 0-6, 4-6. “It was a great battle,” said Gentile. “Overall, I was happy with how I played. There were a lot of talented players there and I felt like I matched up well.” With a majority of his summer vacation still in front of him Gentile, heading into his senior year at Cooperstown Central School, will venture to Hawaii later this month to represent New York state in a tennis tournament showcasing some of the top tennis players in North America. “I’m looking forward to playing in Hawaii,” said Gentile. “It should give me a good indication as to how I’ll match up against some of the best players from other states.” Set to leave on July 23, Gentile – a year-round player at the Oneonta Tennis Club – has been busy during the past few months raising funds for his tennis adventure in Hawaii. While representing New York state in Hawaii, Gentile can expect to play at least two matches a day during his week long stay. Although he still has plenty of time to decide, Gentile is considering several colleges in the southern part off the U.S, at which to further his education. “I’d like to keep playing at the college level, so I’m looking at schools in the south,” said Gentile earlier this spring. “So far I’ve looked into Clemson, Clarkson University of Charleston and the University of Florida. In addition to tennis, Gentile, the son of Penny Gentile of Cooperstown, and the brother of Robert Gentile, enjoys hanging out with friends, and playing soccer and basketball. | Sports Stories | Press Release | Related Links | April 13th Tribute Page | | Jan. 04, 2008 | Local Honor Roll | Pages From The Paper | july 6th 2007 | Hall of Fame Friday | Hall of Fame Saturday | Hall of Fame Sunday | Hall of Fame Monday | July282006 Archive | Aug042006 Archive | Aug112006 Archive | Aug182006 Archive | Sept012006 Archive | Sept082006 Archive | Sept152006 Archive | Sept222006 Archive | Sept292006 Archive | Oct062006 Archive | Oct132006 Archive | Oct202006 Archive | Oct272006 Archive | Nov032006 Archive | Nov172006 Archive | Nov242006 Archive | Dec012006 Archive | Dec082006 Archive | Dec152006 Archive | Dec222006 Archive | Dec292006 Archive | Jan052007 Archive | Jan192007 Archive | Jan262007 Archive | February092007 Archive | February162007 Archive | February232007 Archive | March162007 Archive | March232007 Archive | March302007 Archive | March302007 Archive | April132007 News Archive | Chris Gentile | Obituary | April272007 Archive | May112007 Archive | May112007 Archive | May252007 Archive | June 22, 2007 | July 13 2007 | Sept05 2007 | Sept 7th 2007 | Aug 31st 2007 | Local Law Parking | October 26, 2007 | Nov. 2 2007 | Nov. 16, 2007 | Glimmerglass Oct 5,2007 | Nov 16., 2007 | November 30 2007 | Nov. 30, 2007 | Dec. 07, 2007 | Dec. 14, 2007 | Dec. 21, 2007 | Dec. 28, 2007 | Jan. 11, 2008 | Jan. 18, 2008 | Jan. 25, 2008 | Feb 1, 2008 | Feb. 8, 2008 | Feb. 22, 2008 | GlimmerGlass Feb. 15, 2008 | Sports Feb. 15, 2008 | Feb.28, 2008 | March 7, 2008 | March 14, 2008 | GlimmerGlass March 14, 2008 | March 21, 2008 | March 28, 2008 | April 4, 2008 | April 11, 2008 | April 18, 2008 | April 25, 2008 | May 9, 2008 | May 2, 2008 | May 23, 2008 | | Our Services | Contact Us | Great Links | Return Home | Classified Ads | News Archive | Cooperstown Homes | Calendar -Best Bets | Letters to the Editor | |
